Affairs of the Heart are one of the most anticipated events in Crawford County year after year. The 2009 version was held in the evening for the first time and over 250 ladies took part in Bucyrus Community Hospital’s eighth annual event held at William & Hannah Crawford School in North Robinson.
Ladies were treated to hors d’oeuvres fitting a cruise while visiting the tables of area vendors. Health screening was also offered including blood pressure and bone density. A four course dinner was then served with entertainment from the John Kennedy Orchestra. “While we want to whisk the ladies away for a night and spoil them a bit, we still try to include as many of our area’s entertainers and business owners as we can to give this event a local feel and supporting our local folks," said BCH spokesperson, Nate Roshon.
The Affair of the Heart was born when a local business offered a grant to help with health awareness for the ladies of the community. Eight years later, it has become BCH’s premier community outreach event to not only educate and inform, but also show appreciation for the ladies’ support and patronage of the hospital. HealthLink manager Tammi Wolfe has been the key organizer for each event. She said, “We are so happy to be able to continue offering the event this year in spite of the current economic climate. The ladies really seemed to enjoy themselves and are coming away healthier and more informed and that is what this is all about.”
Participants attended two “breakout sessions” taught by local experts on both healthy and leisure topics ranging from flu season preparation to budget and home décor. The featured speaker was Dr. Pankaj Tiwari, a plastic surgeon from the OSU Medical Center who shared what his field of medicine can do from head to toe. Dr. Tiwari was very well received as he showed a number of slides of his own work including breast reconstruction and cleft lip repair.
The evening concluded with the awarding of a strand of pearls and matching earrings to go along with the seafaring theme. Stacey Kelley of Bucyrus was the lucky winner.
A similar event for the men of the community is coming November 12 as Bucyrus Community Hospital offers its seventh “Hearty Man’s Bowl.” Men Can reserve a seat by leaving a message at 419-563-9380. Space is limited.
